The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law set to commence applications for the annual Innovating Justice Challenge

The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) is set to launch its annual innovating justice challenge and registration for the 2022 edition will run from February 16 – March 31, 2022.

HiiL is a social enterprise committed to delivering user-friendly justice. This means justice that is easy to access, easy to understand and effective. Based in the Netherlands, (in the City of Peace and Justice), HiiL works with leading organisations and international governments to promote the wide scale implementation of new justice innovations.

The Justice Accelerator is HiiL’s flagship innovative programme that funds, trains, and coaches a global cohort of justice startups. Through these startups, HiiL wants to help 150 million people resolve their most pressing justice problems.

What HiiL offers?

HiiL’s Justice accelerator offers successful applicants  a 4-month long programme that provides:

  • €10,000 non-equity funding.
  • Full training program delivered by industry specialists: business growth, marketing, team & leadership, impact measurement and much more.
  • Coaching sessions and mentorship on topics of the participants’ choice.
  • Access to HiiL’s global network of justice leaders, legal tech organisations and top level researchers.
  • International exposure and potential investment opportunities.
  • Chance to win up to €20.000 at Demo Day 2023.

Startups who can apply?

The accelerator program seeks startups that solve people’s justice problems and help them access justice at work, at home, in their neighbourhoods and in business.

For the 2022 accelerator program, HiiL welcomes applications from startups who have:

  • people-centred solutions that prevent or resolve justice problems.
  • a functioning product with some traction (number of users, revenue, etc.) indicating proof of customer demand. Startups in earlier stages are encouraged to contact their respective regional innovation hubs to find out about our ideation and incubation programmes.
  • a sustainability and revenue model. Startups can be non-profit or for-profit.
  • a strong team of founder(s).

Startups from the following countries are welcome to apply:

  • East Africa: Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia
  • West Africa: Nigeria
  • MENA: Tunisia, Lebanon, Jordan, Morocco
