Powered by Google for Entrepreneurs, Startup Grind is a global community for startups. It is designed primarily as a platform to educate, inspire, and connect entrepreneurs. While it was founded in Palo Alto, California, Startup Grind has spread to over 100 countries with up to 30 chapters in Africa. One of these chapters is in Lagos called Startup Grind Lagos led by entrepreneur Uwem Uwemakpan.
Mr Uwemakpan has about a decade of experience running and investing in startups. Straight out of the University in 2011, Uwem ran a web design company, subsequently he became an IT Analyst and Manager at Heirs Holding and Tenoil Energy, respectively. Between then and now, he has invested in a Livestock firm as well as a logistics company. Today, he leads the Endowment Fund for the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
Speaking on his motivation for starting the Lagos Chapter of Startup Grind in November 2016, Mr Uwemakpan tells Benjamindada.com that it was due to his passion for entrepreneurship and training entrepreneurs.
He stumbled on Startup Grind via Twitter and realised that there was a gap in the "entrepreneurial training" available to Nigerians, especially when it has to do with learning from the (failure) stories of other entrepreneurs.
We often don't like to share failure stories here, almost everyone attributes their success to a supernatural being. But this robs others of valuable lessons and mistakes they should avoid.
Uwem notes that their Startup Grind Lagos meetup is a safe haven for entrepreneurs to have heart-felt and open conversations about the risk of "doing startup".
This philosophy is what has birth their monthly hosting of leading entrepreneurs who share their personal stories and lessons learned to a room filled with other young entrepreneurs.
This month, it will be hosting the Founder of OloriSupergal, a leading lifestyle and entertainment website, and Media Exposure, a digital marketing outfit. The event is themed: Becoming an influencer in your industry.
Tosin Ajibade, who recently published her book"From Social Misfit to Social Media Hero" will be speaking on how entrepreneurs can leverage influence in their industry. In the course of her career, Tosin has worked with over 300 corporate and individual clients brands. She has also garnered several accolades, including being listed among the Nigeria's 100 Most Inspiring Women and 100 Most Influential Nigerians on Twitter in 2015.
Purchase tickets for the event online at ₦1,000 or pay ₦2,000 at the venue.
This event will also feature a Startup Clinic (AKA musing sessions)to help entrepreneurs and founders find solutions to their pertinent business problems.
